Lately I've been trying to diverge from the midcentury modern machine. I've been reading Dorothy Draper's books and have always loved Kelly Wearstler's interpretations of Hollywood Regency. But I don't know that I'm at a point financially (or skill-wise) where I'm ready to tackle the tricky task of mixing all those rich patterns and blinged accessories. But to dip my toe in the waters, I've been surfing lamps on eBay, toying with getting something with a tiered or pagoda shade like this:
but then spraying the whole thing white (or at least the base, since I love pops of red color).
I was all set to take the plunge. Start to do something grown up. Then I came across this. And, well, LOVE.
Could I really get away with having this in my apartment? It would obviously need a new shade and the right side table. I'm trying to rationalize that I would translate the kitsch into class like in this framed cowgirl outfit, but I'm not sure I'm confident enough in my skills.
