It was 1997, and I embarked upon what was supposed to be a high school theatre trip to London. But for me it was so much more. It was the first time that I discovered TopShop. I cashed out a savings account built from a summer slinging frozen desserts at Rita's Water Ice and a school year spent averting the creepy advances of the regulars at the 19th Street Movie Theatre. Newly shod in my very first pair of Doc Martens, clutching my first vintage bag from Camden Town Market, I walked shyly into that sartorial pleasure dome. Buffalo plaid babydoll dresses! Silver pleather skirts! Vintage black motorcycle boots! Body glitter! Body glitter! Body glitter!
More than a decade has passed since that fateful day, but I still get butterflies at the very thought of my first cross-pond tryst. And I have been counting down the days till the sweet temptress can woo me (and my financial solvency) from just a few subway stops away. In honor of the April 2nd opening of TopShop NY, I'll be posting a little something each day to get you all hot and bothered. Consider it your fashion foreplay.
Seventeen days and counting till you can buy...
Oh my. That was the start of my "quantity over quality" retail vice. How many ugly pairs of patterned doc martens did we buy on that trip?

Somewhere I have a picture of you worshipping a stack of shoeboxes in a hotel room during that fateful trip to London. I'll have to scan it in.
