I have always been a firm believer that the best gifts are often those frivolous treats that you'd never buy for yourself. Henri Bendel candles are the embodiment of that idea. You get that iconic brown-and-white striped bag and pull out soft layers of tissue to find a smaller striped box, tied up with a polka-dot bow. Inside you'll find a candle that hints at ginger, grapefruit, and cardamom (even when it's not lit). I swiped one off the free table at work a few years ago and have been addicted ever since.
I had never considered cheating on those candles until a recent shopping excursion to Billy Reid. The light warm scent there reminds me of that first brisk day when fall starts to bow towards winter, and you're curled up inside with a good book and a cup of chamomile. I thought perhaps it was an in-house line, but it turns out, that they love Bendel candles too! But instead of the signature scent, the alternate between Fig and Firewood. Yum.
